Training and development

Purpose of training needs analysis
The business environment changes rapidly so businesses need to ensure their workforce have the necessary skills for the work they do. Also, ways of working may change, new technology may be introduced or the nature of work may change. Businesses will need to analyse what their skills needs are, as well as find out the extent to which the people who work for the company already have the skills they need. If they do not have the necessary skills, a training programme can be put in place.

Training methods

Internal/External

In-house training is learning from someone who already does the job. It can be a training course or a mentoring scheme (see below).

External training is provided by an agency outside the business such as a training provider.

On-the-job

Training can happen on-the-job or off-the-job. On-the-job means that the employee receives training whilst doing their normal work, e.g. mentoring or training:

Mentoring

Mentoring is when a more experienced member of the business coaches or supports someone who is less experienced. This is often used when a person starts with the business but can happen at any time in a work period.

Coaching/training scheme

Coaching is a specialist training method involved in discussing and developing ideas for improvement. A coach does not tell people what to do but rather negotiates an improvement plan for them to implement.

Off-the-job
This can include courses away from normal work. It can be internal or external. In-house courses are provided by the employer but external courses are provided outside the workplace, e.g. at a college or training centre.
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are a mix of on-the-job and off-the-job training. Apprentices work on the job and are trained while working. The apprentice will also receive support from a college or training provider.

Effectiveness of training
Businesses will want to measure the effectiveness of the training. If training is about something specific e.g. learning how to use a new system, a business will be able to see the effectiveness of the training by seeing how well the system is used. Another way to measure the effectiveness of training is by asking employees to complete questionnaires based on what has been learned.
