Management and leadership styles
A number of leadership and management styles have been suggested.
Click on the type of style to learn more:
Autocratic
Leaders with an autocratic management style make the decisions and tell people what to do. There is no room for input from others and this can lead to a lack of motivation because people are unable to contribute. However, in some situations, it can be effective, e.g. in the military where instructions need to be followed quickly and there is no room for discussion.
Paternalistic
Paternalistic leaders are much like autocratic leaders in that they make all the decisions. However, a paternal leader looks after the interests of the workers.
Democratic/participatory
A democratic manager encourages discussion and seeks input from others. Decisions will be discussed and made collaboratively. This type of management style can lead to a sense of being part of a team and therefore build motivation but it can take longer to reach decisions.
Laissez-faire
Laissez faire is a French phrase meaning 'let it be' and a laissez faire leader gives workers the freedom to do their jobs without too much control. It can work effectively with highly personally motivated employees but there is a risk that employees may take advantage and that the leader looks weak.
Charismatic
The power of charismatic leaders comes from their personality. They have the ability to inspire and motivate people. They are confident, easy to get along with and persuasive. Examples of famous charismatic people are Barak Obama, Jurgen Klopp, Malala Yousafzaia and Greta Thunberg.
