Module 2: Exploring how businesses are organised

Private Sector Businesses

It is often said that the aim of the private sector is to make a profit. While this is true to an extent, their objectives can differ depending on the company but also where the company is at in terms of its development. A newly established company may have vastly different goals from a company that has long established itself in the market. Click on the aims to learn more:

Making a profit

Profit is the reward investors earn for the risk and money they have put into the business.

Maximising profit

Maximising profit is a strategy of making the highest possible profit so the business will try to find the production level that leads to the most profit possible.

Break-even

There are costs to starting a business and in some industries these costs are huge. For many businesses, especially in their first years, their goal is to break even.

Survival

In the UK, according to research by Fundsquire, a global start-up funding network, 20% of small businesses fail in their first year. About 60% of small businesses fail within the first three years. Therefore, for many start-ups their main aim is survival. This is also true when businesses go through a period they didn’t anticipate. For example, during the Covid lockdown some businesses faced difficulties due to a lack of customers. During that time, survival would be their only aim.

Growth

Another aim that is important in the private sector is growth and for some businesses it is the overriding aim. Growing quickly can be a risk because growth means investing in the business, but it can be a successful strategy because it can lead to greater profits in the long run. According to the Wales Fast Growth 50 project – the 50 fastest growing companies generated £654m of turnover in 2021 and employed almost 4,000 people.
