Management Functions
Management has a number of functions:
Planning
This aspect is about setting objectives and strategies as well as planning how to meet them. For example, a marketing manager planning a new marketing campaign will look at the objectives of the campaign and decide who will do what, by when, and with what resources.
Organising
Fulfilling the plans will require organisation of physical, intellectual and human resources. So, in a marketing campaign, for example, there will need to be a plan that sets out exactly what needs to be done, e.g. setting objectives, researching the target market, setting a budget, choosing advertising channels and so on.
Coordinating
It is important that a manager can coordinate the team's work to ensure that everyone is working as a team and that the objectives are met.
Controlling
Managers have control over projects and activities. By organising, coordinating and monitoring they are able to ensure that the project/activity is completed to the expected standard.
Monitoring
Monitoring is about measuring progress towards objectives. In other words, keeping an eye on whether the objectives are being met. Through monitoring, barriers can be identified early and alternative plans put in place to ensure they meet expectations.
Delegating
Delegation entails giving tasks to other people. Managers will need to delegate to maximise their human resources and ensure that objectives are met.
