Public Organisations

Public Organisations are owned and funded by the Government. The best known example to us in Wales is the National Health Service (NHS). The taxpayer funds the NHS through the Government. Public Organisations are often set up to meet a fundamental need – in the case of the NHS, our basic need for health.

Another reason for a Public Organisation is an industry that is strategically or politically important. For example, the Royal Mint in Llantrisant is a Public Organisation owned by the Treasury. The main purpose of the Royal Mint is to mint coins for the United Kingdom although it also mints coins for special events.
